Is an excellent micro clean up crew. Breaks down decaying waste after the larger hermit crabs and snails finish their job, thereby, creating a well rounded circle of life in our marine tanks.
Provides the natural movement that fish, like seahorses, Leafy Sea dragons , mandarins, pipefish, butterfly fish, (just to name a few) are always looking for. The enticing movement of these mysids is what attracts fish to consider them appetizing.
Mysids can help us to wean fish slowly over to dried or frozen foods. Your pets won’t get as much of a shock having to change from what they are used to feeding in the wild, or die in the process before they have a chance to adapt.
Many of the fish that we purchase at our local pet store are used to feeding on live prey animals. There are certain trigger responses that illicit feeding behavior. This is one of the reasons many of the fish that we try to keep in captivity slowly wither away, in a period of sometimes months , and then die, even though we have all our pumps, skimmers, bells and whistles and everything right. Many times this happens because the animal’s instinct is developed, (or you might say trained) to key in on certain triggers that set off their feeding response. These feeding triggers are related to sight, sound, smell, and sometimes touch and of course taste. So we end up with a beautiful fish that does not seem to want to eat very much, and slowly loses its color and vitality. If we are lucky, some will even eat the food that we feed them, but the pellets or what ever, does not contain the appropriate vitamins and minerals for the fishes’ ultimate health in the long run.
These live mysids are a key ingredient to achieve the well - being of our fish. They allow us as hobbyist, to be able to help a fish get acclimated to its new world when we take them from their happy home in the wild.
Function in the marine aquarium:
They are very beneficial as a micro cleanup crew. If you can establish a breeding colony in your sump or main tank, they will live and reproduce in your system, thus providing valuable nutrition for the captive kept animals: Such as anemonae, Pipefish, Seahorses, Mandarins, all types of gobies, small to medium cuddlefish and many more. Mysid are a vital part of the micro fauna (Zooplankton) in our natural ocean reefs. We believe that they should be an integral part of our captive ecosystems in our home aquariums. They are part of the Ocean’s life cycle that we should try to recreate when we set up Reef system aquariums. We believe that our aquariums should reflect as much as possible the natural flora and fauna of the earths oceans. Many animals rely on a complete life cycle in their environment in order to live and thrive to their best potential.
Behavior & Characteristics:
It is a natural planktonic predator. Means it swims in the water column and feeds on zooplankton.
It also likes to eat detritus and things like leftover food. That’s leftover fish food. Not your left over dinner J. If you have shrimp eating fish, these shrimp will find hiding holes in rocks and crevices to hang out in and constantly search for food particles. If they sense possible predators in your tank they will not be as visible except maybe at night when the fish go to sleep. The mysids are mostly nocturnal like most zooplanktons. The female carries her babies in a brood pouch, like a possum, eventually releasing them as fully functional replicas of the parents, fully developed.
Put some in your sump or refugium if you have it. And put some more in your main display after lights out and fish have settled. The mysids will constantly breed and produce fully developed babies smaller than 1 millimeter which will become a very nutritious live food for those picky eaters like Butterfly Fish, Dragonettes, Baby Seahorses dwarf seahorses and others. They’re a great addition to Coral Reef tanks. The mysids are constantly busy cleaning all around the corals.
Tip for helping establish a live reproducing mysid colony in your reef tank.
Place live rock in a way that you create small half inch high cave or shelves preferably on the bottom near the sand. This will give the mysid shrimp a place to take refuge from predation. Most likely the mysid will establish a colony and start to self reproduce in your tank where the fish can't eat them all at once.
